WHY

Why ZA Consulting

Field fluency, paired with a willingness to question it.

Michelle Grove Herzog brings something uncommon to nonprofit consulting — a deep fluency in how the field works, including its structures, funding landscapes, and governance frameworks, paired with a genuine willingness to challenge those conventions when they're not serving an organization's mission. She is a BoardSource-certified nonprofit board consultant and a skilled facilitator who brings rigor and adaptability to every engagement, whether she's leading a board retreat, guiding an organization through strategic transition, or designing a leadership program. For organizations in Southern Arizona, few consultants combine national-level experience with the kind of local presence that understands community context — and fewer still bring that range to the cultural sector with real depth.

ABOUT

About ZA Consulting

Two decades across grantmaking, cultural strategy, and the academy.

ZA Consulting (ZogArts Consulting, LLC) is led by Michelle Grove Herzog, a nationally recognized arts leader with over twenty years of experience in grantmaking, cultural strategy, and program development, complemented by a background as a professional musician and university presenter. The firm specializes in nonprofit board development; strategic planning; the creation and facilitation of customized professional development initiatives; and philanthropy and grantmaking program design and evaluation.

In addition to her consulting practice, Michelle teaches arts administration at the University of Arizona and served five years as Director of the Arts Administration Program, where she provided strategic leadership for program growth and sustainability — growing the program over 600% and designing a new Master's in Arts Administration. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses focused on nonprofit management, governance, financial management, fundraising, marketing, community engagement, and professional leadership development.

Previously, Michelle held leadership roles including Interim Associate Director for the Center for the Arts at Wesleyan University, Program Officer for Performing Arts at Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and Director of Grants at the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (MD). These roles provided deep experience in national and regional funding landscapes, artist and organizational support structures, and the design of programs that respond to evolving field needs. Michelle holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance and French from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Master of Arts in Arts Management from American University and has basic French and Spanish communication skills.
